Teachers for Transformation Academy

About TFTA

The Teachers for Transformation Academy is a one-year fellowship that engages successful current teachers in the education reform movement.  This comprehensive program provides teachers with a broad platform of knowledge focused on education policy, advocacy, and outreach. The program also equips teachers with the resources and tools to build and lead active networks of reform-minded educators in their local communities.  Finally, Academy Teachers serve as valuable thought partners with our policy team and inform StudentsFirst’s evolving policy agenda.

Program Structure

The Academy Teacher program begins in June of each year and ends the following June.  The program is designed to complement the schedules of busy, full-time teachers.  Monthly trainings are held after work hours and teachers are invited to Sacramento for two intensive weekend workshops.

Academy Teacher Activities

Throughout the fellowship, Academy Teachers work closely with their StudentsFirst headquarters and state teams to engage in a variety of activities, including:

  • Recruiting local teachers to join the movement
  • Hosting events, including happy hours and book clubs, for educators interested in learning more about education reform
  • Meeting with state legislators to discuss approaching legislation
  • Testifying before public officials to change legislation
  • Writing op-eds for local and national publications
  • Contributing blogs and other content for the StudentsFirst website
  • Co-hosting events with the StudentsFirst state teams
  • Attending and speaking at major education reform forums and events within your state

Why Become an Academy Teacher?

My experience teaching kids in South Carolina is what motivates me personally and professionally every day. That is why I applied to be a Teacher Fellow with StudentsFirst. Throughout the course of my Fellowship, I have had hundreds of conversations with teachers and educators in SC interested in pursuing educational change.  StudentsFirst has given me and my teacher network a voice around policy issues that affect our students.  It is empowering and I am so thankful for this opportunity. -Amanda
